For the rainy day (or any day).

Choimatic “20 Minutes Of Mahogany”

This is a mix by the homie Moe Choi aka Choimatic. A blend of good, soulful music from a dude who loves Morrissey as much as he loves M.O.P. I mean look at dude: he’s got gold fronts and has lines shaved in his head and he hangs out with Large Professor, Rob Swift and DJ Lomang (Ghostface’s DJ in China) while wearing a Depeche Mode lambswool knit sweater. Mind blasting.

You should listen on the strength of that alone.

Catch him spinning with me (Empanadamn) next Sunday, June 28, at Littlefield for the mixtape exchange party that I have yet to create a clever name for.

Nickodemus Homespun Sessions Mix

In: Mixes, Music, NYC

Nickodemus, founder of the 10-years-running party institution known as Turntables On the Hudson, has put together a mix for TONY‘s Homespun Sessions to promote their party this Friday in Queens with the legendary Osunlade. The mix has got a little of everything, from Omar and Q-Tip to Candela and Hector Lavoe, with the signature TOTH world-wise influence that fans have come to know and love. Check it out:

Nick is extended fam of Soular Grooves (which is, of course, extended fam of the buhbOmp crew), and he’s got a new album out called Sun People. Check it out and support if you’ve got the means.

If you’re in NY, check out the TOTH party this Friday at Water Taxi Beach in Long Island City, Queens:

Turntables on the Hudson with DJ’s Nickodemus & Mariano + Nappy G & Christian Rogers on percussion. Special guest OSUNLADE (Yoruba Records) in his first outdoor NYC appearance!!

Address: #2 Borden Ave in LIC QUEENS. $10 / 8PM – 2AM. There are FREE Water Taxis every 20 minutes from East 35th Street to the party!!

How the hell did June get here already? Here’s another monthly Welfare handout from the buhbOmp crew to give you a boost while summer slowly kicks in.

Little Dragon Feat. Trackademicks – After The Rain (Trackademics Remix)
*Sorry only a 192kbps file
I first heard Yukimi Nagano’s soulful croonage over Sleepwalker’s “Afloat” (big up to the dude Aser for dropping the knowledge gem way back in 2006) and she’s been a name I’ve casually followed since. Here she is with the rest of her band, Little Dragon with some remix love from Bay Area producer Trackademics.

Sa-Ra – Bitch Baby
*Sorry only a 192kbps file here AGAIN
Seriously ill summer track that just happens to be the lead single from Sa-Ra’s official debut album, Nuclear Evolution, The Age of Love. Make sure you cop this album when it drops!

Snap aka Red Clay – Live Learn
This man is a Houston legend. A staple in the underground hip hop scene here, Snap’s always impressed me with vicious wordplay and even more dangerous delivery. Big ups to the crew over at Rappers I know, so leaking this.

The Dream – Walkin’ on the Moon (UMYO Remix)
UMYO is yet another in a short line of Scandinavian producers that I’m rapidly becoming obsessed with. His treatment of Walkin’ on the Moon mellows out the vibe a bit, but still keeps it’s club compliance.

Floatingpoints – Lovemelikethis(ftps remix)
Ok, I need the venti latte pass with extra foam on this remix, but I’m making up for it with extra heavy early rotation. Holleur at it, folkels.

dj lil tiger | on some nostalgia shit

Leela James – My Joy (Quentin Harris Vocal)
Classic deep house production from the legend Quentin Harris.

Cedric “Im” Brooks – United Africa
Uplifting little number from Jamaica’s Cedric Brooks off his big band jazz/reggae album United Africa.

Joe Bataan – Chevere Que Chevere
Here’s a funky, soulful, percussive tune from El Barrio‘s Godfather of Latin Soul, Joe Bataan, off his 2005 Call My Name LP. Black Filipinos stand up! Halfies stay winning.

Do or Die feat. Twista – Po Pimp
Dolla Holla Show classic. This is the tune that put Twista back on the map for me.

Fugazi – Sweet and Low
Since I’m traipsing through the sprawling fields of my youth, I’ll throw in this favorite of mine from punk heroes Fugazi. This still gets me every time I hear it.

Jay-Z “D.O.A.” (Death Of Autotune)
F-auto-tune, hip-hop is dead, where the real MCs at?, yadda yadda. Who cares? I’m just happy to hear that Dion is staying busy. This song will not change the game.

Ellie Goulding “Starry Eyed” (Jakwob Remix)
This was hipped to me by Elz. Right now, this is it for me; the tune is getting played on repeat like I was a teenage girl in love. Now, I’m not totally into dubstep, but something about girly-pop vocals, dashes of xylophone and galloping drum change-ups against the low-end grit and grind that sounds like a giant electric can opener getting in a fight with a trash compactor that totally does it for me.

The Isley Brothers “For The Love Of You”
Not only sample worthy, but a stand alone, feel good track for that summer breeze steez.

Koop “Summer Sun” (Feat. Yukimi Nagano)
I discovered Koop while watching TV at a concert. Though I couldn’t hear anything from the video, I was captivated by the style of the video with its layers, shapes and fast cuts, but moreover WHO THE HELL IS THAT HOT CHICK UP IN THERE SANGIN’?!?!? After reading the credits, I went home did the research and boom: Koop -> Yukimi Nanago. At the time, she was probably 16 or 17, so I’m totally a pedol’ dirty-scum-bag. Forgive me for having taste in good music. Catch her group Little Dragon at SummerStage this July with an awesome line-up!
(Side note, Koop is the reason why Aser & I are friends.)

Sonny & Cher “I Got You Babe”
Last, but not least, this is a special dedication to some good, long-time friends Jamie & Wes. The two love birds went away to Paris a couple of weeks ago and returned engaged. So this one’s for them – congratulations! I love you guys. (No auto-tune-o.)

** INSTRUCTIONS FOR DOWNLOADING **
We host all our Welfare downloads off-site, so what you need to do to download them is to click on the song name in the post, and then look for a download link on the page that that takes you to.

We mostly use divShare, so for divShare follow these steps to download the songs:

– Click on the name of the song. That will take you to a divShare page.

– On the divShare page, look for the black circle with an arrow pointing down. Below that arrow is a link that says “Download original”. Click that link and after a few seconds, the download should start automatically.

That should do it.

If the file is hosted on some other site besides divShare (like ZShare or MediaFire or something) then just look for a link on that site’s page that says download. When you click on the download link, it will probably do something similar to divShare and make you wait a handful of seconds before it starts the download (or offers a specific link to the download).

Hit us up in the comments if you need further instruction. We’re here to help. Thanks.

Way back before the interwebs and series of tubes, people used to trade/barter rap goodies on cassettes or record music straight from radio shows. Well, some people may have been messing around with girls or avoiding playing Bill Walsh College Football and NHL 94 like the meaning of life was trapped inside the game … but those people missed out. Ahem, moving on.

I think I became an official tape barterer with many of the people on this site (looking at you Lil Tiger, Cashless, K. Orr), plus we all had our own connections spread out around the world that would bring us a few treats from time to time.

Back in the day, we would treat these like buried treasures, playing them on our radio shows (usually complete with us talking over a part of it, just to be assholes or protect our “exclusives”). Seems kinda funny now in the mpfree age, I know. So anyway, I’ve had these tapes sitting around for many years now and have always wanted to digitize them. This is tape one in the process. I’m going to try and put up one or two every week or so, the “or so” being in place to protect me from ridicule when I post vol 2 up six months from now.

I’ve included a pic of the tape case below, which gives you a track listing. Comically, this tape was titled, “Some Shit U Ain’t Got!!!”. Yes, with the “U” and the three exclamation marks. Clever naming FAIL, indeed. My favorites include the Nas freestyle–the third verse is banana mango hotness (inside joke alert), plus the “you better get it on time kid” line was used often by me back in the day for no reason. The Mr. Voodoo songs also are nice, Voodoo was way too slept on for that time.

some-shit-u-aint-got-cover

Track Listing:
Mr. Voodoo – Magic
Mr. Voodoo – Hemlock
Stretch & Bobbito – A random freestyle that “Chill” Will Strickland (Houston folks definitely know the name) was really feeling and dubbed for me.
Nas “freestyle”
Artifacts & Total Pack
Instrumental
Kool Keith – Kick a Dope Verse
Kool Keith – Shit is Wack
Kool Keith – Rhymes I Sniff
Kool Keith – Peein’ on Em’
Ultramgnetic MC’s – Checkin My Style
Instrumental

Always got love for the hometown folks. Houston’s D. Rose been putting it down for a minute. I really started to check for this dude’s music when I heard “Move Slow” back in, I think, 2004. Love that tune.

Last year, D. Rose linked up with legendary Houston producer/DJ/barber DJ Cozmos to put out a really dope album called Taster’s Choice, a remastered version of which will be released soon on iTunes.

They just put out a new video from the album. “Play It Cool” features Damien of The Legendary K.O. (aka K-Otix), who directed the video and leads off the track. Also check the cameos from fellow Houston talents: H.I.S.D‘s Savvi and Scottie Spitten, Kay (of Example and Nicolay and Kay fame), and the other half of The Legendary K.O., Big Mon:

While I’ve got your attention, peep the first video, “Beautiful World,” also off Taster’s Choice:

And if you want get to know more about D. Rose, Damien gets the assist:

Leftside Wobble is back with another trip down memory lane. No barriers. Just good music. In his words:

House, Techno, Garage, Nu Wave, Acid, Tribal, Miami Deep, Breakbeat – good memories ensured for those who should know better and a great musical journey for those new to some of these tracks.
