These next few come in support of this month’s upcoming Sound Liberation Front Festival 2009 that the homie lil’ tiger sank his paws into.

Brand Nubian “All For One”
This was the song that set it off for me. As soon as I heard it, I told my one friend who always had money (thanks to his loving, out-of-state living aunt & grandparents) that he had to buy it. Then I proceeded to make a copy of the cassette. Check the rhymes from Sadat (Derek) X: “Don’t play possum / Watch me and I’ll blossom like a rose, and get some new clothes…” Interesting choice in words given the controversial terms used in “Punks Jump Up”.

Brand Nubian “Punks Jump Up To Get Beat Down”
In wake of Grand Puba leaving the group to pursue a solo career with Reel To Reel, Brand Nubian released In God We Trust. “Punks Jump Up” was definitely the stand-out track from the album, resonating as the riggiddy-raw credo among many at the time, perfectly chimed with the Rocky Theme. Posted is the clean, radio version because Sadat X’s raps are nicer to people.

Mary J. Blige “What’s The 411?” (Feat. Grand Puba)
Grand Puba puts it down on the queen of hip-hop soul blonde amazon’s debut album. Big kid style.

Jean Carn “Don’t Let It Go To Your Head”
Sampled 70s tune for the Foundation album.

Akinelye & Sadat X “Loud Hangover”
Promotional single in support of the Loud label coming into its own, this track later appeared on Funkmaster Flex’s 60 Minutes of Funk, Volume 1. Lucky for you, this is without all the signature FMF yellin’.

*Did you know?: The homie DJ Tahleim, who also DJs at White Rabbit (Saturdays), was once a back-up dancer for Brand Nubian.
**Bonus attempt: I tried looking for the Sprite commercial with Grand Puba, but the man took it off YouTube. That commercial alone is the reason why I choose to drink Sprite over 7-Up or Sierra Mist. Aight?

The Uniques – Queen Majesty
I don’t really have much to say about this one. It speaks for itself — The Uniques with their rocksteady, classic interpolation of Curtis Mayfield. The Queen Majesty riddim stays timeless and keeps on giving.

Likwid Biskit – Life Is Like A Samba
I can be accused of talking about this dude too much, but I’m okay with that. IG Culture is a fucking genius. Deal. Here’s a track from 10 years ago that he released under the Likwid Biskit monicker with fellow innovator and keyboard savant Kaidi Tatham, who shines his light all over this lovely tune. As always, ride this one all the way through and peep how IG flips the track.

Candi Staton – I’m Just a Prisoner (Of Your Good Lovin’)
An early gem from soul and gospel legend Candi Staton, off of her I’m Just a Prisoner LP released in 1969.

American Analog Set – Gone To Earth
I recently had an indie rock time warp when I went to see Versus and Superchunk do a free show at the South Street Seaport. While I was there, I met up with my friend DRM (of Bastard Jazz fame), and AmAnSet worked its way into our conversation. Since then, I’ve been revisiting them and remembering why they were so awesome. This tune, off The Fun of Watching Fireworks LP was always one of my favorites. It’s kind of perfect, especially how it comes together so brilliantly after the change.

Lorelei – Newsprint
Since we’re taking a trip back, here’s another favorite from my indie/twee/shoegaze days. I first came across Lorelei (not to be confused with either of my beloved Gilmores [yeah, I just went there] ) when I picked up their Asleep 7″ and ended up falling in love with a tune called “Mostly I Sleep.” I was elated when they put out an album called Everyone Must Touch the Stove, and this tune quickly became one of my favorites. I love the energy and all the change-ups, especially the beautiful instrumental shift about three-and-a-half minutes in.

Bonus cut: Mad Kap – Dickie’s Emporium
This actually should have been called Khaki’s Emporium, but who cares? This shit still makes me laugh. Oh, Mad Kap.

touch&feel:radio is a podcast founded by MR. VISH and DJ LIL TIGER that features a dirty-style blend of various types of soulful urban music from around the world. Another excellent Michael Jackson re-edit by U-Tern. You might not have heard “Hot Street” before, but here’s a little background for ya.

Written by Rod Temperton and failed to make Michael’s album, Thriller, as Temperton and Quincy Jones didn’t feel it was strong enough.

A great remix, although I think it loses some of the emotion of the original.

The Jackson 5 – Body Language (King Most intro edit)
Some strong funk on this joker! The horns are big, the bass heavy… This stomper was made to move people and King Most helps the dj’s deliver it to the masses!

UMYO is yet another in a short line of Scandinavian producers that I’m rapidly becoming obsessed with. His treatment of Walkin’ on the Moon mellows out the vibe a bit, but still keeps it’s club compliance.

Ellie Goulding “Starry Eyed” (Jakwob Remix)
This was hipped to me by Elz. Right now, this is it for me; the tune is getting played on repeat like I was a teenage girl in love. Now, I’m not totally into dubstep, but something about girly-pop vocals, dashes of xylophone and galloping drum change-ups against the low-end grit and grind that sounds like a giant electric can opener getting in a fight with a trash compactor that totally does it for me.

The Isley Brothers “For The Love Of You”
Not only sample worthy, but a stand alone, feel good track for that summer breeze steez.

Koop “Summer Sun” (Feat. Yukimi Nagano)
I discovered Koop while watching TV at a concert. Though I couldn’t hear anything from the video, I was captivated by the style of the video with its layers, shapes and fast cuts, but moreover WHO THE HELL IS THAT HOT CHICK UP IN THERE SANGIN’?!?!? New cut off of The Alchemist’s forthcoming Chemical Warfare. This beat is murderlous. The rapping is kinda third-rate, but hey, it’s 2009!

Teairra Mari “Diamonds” (Feat. Kanye West)
I don’t condone diamonds, so in exchange, I’ll put this song on your finger. I don’t care if you say no.

The Secret Handshake “Brand New Love”
An album cut from Dallas native Luis Dubuc’s The Secret Handshake. My Name Up In Lights carries forward on that electronic rock / bubble gum / synth pop tip. I’m not really feeling the album on the whole. Dude needs to put the breaks on the auto-tune and mix it up with some females vocals. I’d be OK with instrumentals though.

Novalima “Yo Voy” (Seiji Remix)
Peruvian Afro-Latin blaps with the Seiji drum treatment. Escucha esto.

Datarock “New Days Dawn”
One of the more toned down cuts from the poppy/synth rock Norwegian duo’s soon to be released album Red.

Heavy West African funk and soul vibes from Sierra Leone’s Geraldo Pino, an early influence of the man they call Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

Major Lazer – Hold The Line (Poirier remix)
Montréal’s Ghislain Poirier (a recent addition to the Ninja Tune stable) puts his smoking hot Wha-La-La-Leng Riddim underneath the already intense debut from Major Lazer, the Diplo/Switch mega-collabo that got all the kiddies all twisted up. Mr. Lexx and Santigold on the vox, of course.

Organized Konfusion – Decisions
Here’s a little gem I used to play endlessly during my moodier Hip-Hop days. This is off the America Is Dying Slowly compilation for AIDS awareness circa 1996. I forget how good Monch and Prince Po used to sound together.

The Aislers Set – Walked in Line (Live)
I miss The Aislers Set. They’re one of my all time favorite bands, and it saddens me that most folks have never heard of them. I remain devout. This tune is a cover of Joy Division’s “Walked In Line” from The Aislers Sets’ sessions for John Peel (R.I.P.) in 2003 at Maida Vale. More detail about those recordings here.

Vanessa Freeman – Sunrays
The ever prolific Vanessa Freeman pours sunrays all over your soul. One of the more beautiful tracks on The Chromatic Universe compilation that Alex Attias put together back in 2002.

DC’s producer du jour, Oddisee along with rappers X.O. and YU are Diamond District. I first heard Oddisee on Pete Rosenberg’s A Rosenberg Oddiseemixtape (look at that cover artwork, I don’t even need to tell you who’s style that is) and have been checking for him ever since. I kinda picked I Mean Business arbitrarily, but it definitely gives off the boom-bappish feel of the album and Oddisee’s production in general.

This is all Cosmo Baker’s fault. I mean, I’ve always loved Saadiq going back to the TTT days, but hearing Cosmo’s mix of his work really put it all in perspective. Raphael Saadiq is a genius. Period. Just listen and you’ll see. From Tony! Toni! Tone! & Stevie Wonder to Q-Tip & DJ Quik, he is just that dude.

So, without jumping further on his nuts…fast forward a couple days later and I’m driving around town bumping this CD. “Still Ray” came on and stayed on and that’s when I knew I had to re-do it (now I know how Dre must’ve felt). I came home and listened to it, figured out the piano part and played everything else from there. Once I was finished I called my man Miles Bonny to lay down vocals and trumpet like only he can and here it is, free for you. …

This was going to (and still might) come out on vinyl with another Saadiq cover I did that’s an instrumental. I’ll keep you all posted and I might just post it on the strength*.

B.o.B. – I’ll Be in The Sky (Astronote Remix)
Fact: B.o.B. is just straight up corny. Since Haterz Everywhere, B.o.B. has been on some after-school special shit. One more feelgoody two-shoes joint outta this dude, and I’m officially classifying him as a gospel rapper. Producer Astronote allows me to temporarily forget this.

U.N.K.L.E. “Bloodstain”
This weather got me ag and reverting to my leave-me-be, emo skull thuggery. Here’s a personal favorite, moody track with sad girl lyrics from DJ Shadow-produced UNKLE.

Junior Boys “Parallel Lines”
Junior Boys is not only Michael Jackson’s favorite department to hang while at JC Penny’s (just kiddin’, homie), but a gleaming Canadian export implementing live instrumentation, production and vocals. This is the lead track off their most recent album Begone Dull Care.

Camera Obscura “Careless Love”
This Scottish outfit is a breath of fresh air / palate cleanser for a lot of stuff that I’ve been subjected to recently. It’s musically clean without being sterile, inflecting light to heavy-heartedness throughout. Chicks (like me) really dig this stuff. Also, just to clarify, there’s no bag pipes in this so don’t get your hopes up, McScrooge.

Depeche Mode “In Sympathy”
Gotta give it up to these dudes. They’ve been putting out music, performing and touring for close to 3 decades. Their sixty-11th album Sounds Of The Universe, dropping later this month, continues the tradition of their later albums with the darknesses prevailing over their shiny-happy new wave beginnings. This one accomplishes being depressing and uptempo at the same time.

Prince “Let’s Pretend We’re Married”
I went to DJ Spinna‘s Soul Slam party last Saturday with my friend Minuette and while dancing Diddy pulled me into his circle of fun ( || ). After extinguishing my dancing shoes, I opened a Twitter account just to thank @iamdiddy, then filmed a live video blog on the spot to tell my friends around the world the news about Cassie’s new half-shaved head. SIKE! (about the Twitter / v-blog part)

Estelle f. Kardinal Offishall – Magnificent
This song is catchy as hell, and I can’t stop listening to it. I’ve also been a long time Kardinal fan, so that helps. Ronson got the touch.

Black Milk – Mo Power (right-click and save as)
Detroit’s Black Milk are really doing it for me lately, and this tune is sick as hell. Short, but sick as hell. Dudes got the drum game down solid. (Proppers to Rappers I Know (as usual) for showing me the way.)

JP ft Ash Man & Xei – Jungle Skank
This tune epitomizes everything I love about Funky House right now. Got the Afro-Caribbean tribal vibe. Got raw, sexy club feel with the proper low end. Got the change-ups. All kinds of unusual shit going on here, and I’m all about it.

Jah Cure – Searching
This is my favorite off the Indiscretions riddim. Jah Cure always brings the true emotion, and this tune makes me want to curl up next to my gal and pretend the rest of the world doesn’t exist.

Mondo Grosso – Now You Know Better
This is off Mondo Grosso‘s MG4 album that came out in 2000, and it still sounds great. I’m also a sucker for anything that showcases Amel Larrieux‘s beautiful and mesmerizing voice.
