Lil Tiger

As promised, we’re bringing a stronger effort from the team this time around, with Cashless and Empanadamn rejoining Lil Tiger to bring y’all some certified Welfare heat.

(Click the song names to take you to the off-site sharing pages where you can download the tunes. For detailed instructions on how to navigate the sharing sites where we host our files, we’ve got instructions at the end of this post)

cashless | WTF FML FTW

Rye Rye – Bang feat M.I.A
“I heard the song and I had to scream. They had [her] rhyming over a hyped drum machine”. The jury’s still out for me on this cut, but I’m throwing it up because Rye Rye’s (no Ri Ri) lined herself up to take the hipster rap queen crown. Bet that.

U-N-I & Ro BLVD – Stylin
“Oh, you mad cuz I’m styling on you.” Actually I’m not mad at “Stylin”. I am bugging on how obviously Kanye West influenced the track is though. Also, did they diss The Knux? I hope so! Someone had to diss those talentless fools sometime.

Dj Class – I’m the ish feat. Kanye
I’m definitely not feeling the remix as much as I am the O.G. The Kanyelectro treatment scrubs away the hard B-More coat of the O.G. that I enjoyed. Whatever, blah. There’s a Lil Wayne and Estelle remix coming soon too (via Estelle’s twitter account). Look for “I’m the ish” to take up where “Day n Nite” left off. Becky, holleur.

UGK – Swishas & Erb feat. Sleepy Brown
Long live PIMP C. UGK4LIFE! What else needs to be said?

Eddie Kendricks – Date with the Rain (extended)
One of the OG steppers, Kendricks had a distinct voice that you can recognize from the first few notes. “Date with the Rain” is no exception. Presented in it’s extended form. Peep how Spring this feels.

—————

dj lil tiger | cold be damned

Q-Tip – We Fight, We Love (Remix) feat. Kanye West and Consequence
Something new here from the suddenly prolific Q-Tip, with the ubiquitous ‘Ye and the second-coming of Jarobi.

Deee-Lite feat. Q-Tip – Groove is in the Heart (Morsy Mix)
Sticking with the Q-Tip theme, Nanachill‘s DJ Morsy gives this dancefloor classic a subtle re-fresh.

Wayne Marshall – Blame De Weed
Because it had to be done. Wayne Marshall gives Jamie Foxx’s Blame It a hit of that good shit.

Teedra Moses – I Think Of You
I think folks are sleeping on Teedra Moses. This is the tune that closes out her Complex Simplicity album from a few years ago, and it’s a really touching and personal number. The actual song comes in at about the 1:40 mark, but Teedra’s opening words and the snippet of gospel at the beginning give the song its proper context. This song makes me want to hug my mom and never let go.

Sam Cooke – Mean Old World
Just a beautiful tune from the master, Sam Cooke, off of his Night Beat album.

—————

empanadamn | Yeah Yeah Nos | Serato-ready

Wale “Chillin'” (Feat. Lady Caca)
After all the foot work in his Nike boots, Wale got signed to Interscope and is slated to release his album Attention Deficit this summer. A preview of the album, “Chillin'” features Lady Caca as she shits all over the track in her best M.I.A. impression. :*( Come on, dawg!!!

Jamie Foxx “Blame It” (Ted Smooth Blend Feat. T-Pain)
Here’s a different take on a club favorite. Switch it up and get it crunk on dem hoez.

Cam’ron “Cookies & Apple Juice” (Feat. Bird Lady)
Killa! First with the compelling “I Hate My Job” and now this one, Cam is back. And it looked like a Dipset reunion was in the works when Jim Jones reached out to Cam on the Funk Flex show on Hot 97 with hopes of getting the crew back together and taking over. Cam responded with a negatory, and chunked a deuce out the roof of his Camborghini while driving away.

The-Dream “Let Me See The Booty (Feat. Lil’ Jon)”
The litmus test for the shorty with the winning assets. Lil’ Jon puts some extra sexy on it.

Lil’ SNS “AIM So Crazy” (Feat. DJ Webstar)*
Son of Harlem’s mixtape DJ S&S, Lil’ SNS does his thang over a blitzkrieg of AIM sound bites courtesy of DJ Webstar. This one takes me back to the many lonely hours logged on AOL instant messenger before I discovered the sound setting preferences. Bound to give all the AIM heads / chatroom predators a seizure.

* We don’t actually have a downloadable version of this tune yet, but we still wanted to put it on your radar anyway.

** DOWNLOAD INSTRUCTIONS **
We host all our Welfare downloads off-site, so what you need to do to download them is to click on the song name in the post, and then look for a download link on the page that that takes you to.

We mostly use divShare, so for divShare follow these steps to download the songs:

– Click on the name of the song. That will take you to a divShare page.

– On the divShare page, look for the black circle with an arrow pointing down. Below that arrow is a link that says “Download original”. Click that link and after a few seconds, the download should start automatically.

That should do it.

If the file is hosted on some other site besides divShare (like ZShare or MediaFire or something) then just look for a link on that site’s page that says download. When you click on the download link, it will probably do something similar to divShare and make you wait a handful of seconds before it starts the download (or offers a specific link to the download).

We began this little project in L.A. back in August of 2005, but life put the brakes on things a year later when Lil Tiger moved to NY to start a new life, and Mr. Vish moved back to Houston to attend to his family.

After a long break, though, it’s time to bring this baby back and get the music flowing once more. Thanks for sticking with us. Much more to come.

dj lil tiger | all by my lonely

The Supremes – Stoned Love (Joey Honey Delegation Mix)
Joey Honey, who sometimes (rarely?) contributes to this site, put this little gem together, and I love it. A lot. As he says (tongue firmly in cheek): “Who would EVER have guessed the Supremes x disco would be a good fit?”

Madeline Bell – That’s What Friends Are For (Danny Krivit Re-Edit)
This is a wonderful rework of a tune that makes me feel great every time I hear it. Danny Krivit is, of course, a living legend and an inspiration. I saw him spin at Deep back in L.A. a number of years ago and he was amazing. Actually, now that I’m thinking about it, I’m mad at myself for not checking him out here in the city. I need to get on that. Anyway, if you’ve yet to be touched by the brilliance of one of Danny Krivit’s infamous re-edits, you have no idea what you’ve been missing. Also, you’re welcome.

AphroDisiax – Unfinished Business (links to Juno where you can listen to and buy the record.)
This is a killer House tune (that also fits neatly into the (UK) Funky umbrella) from AphroDisiax, a West London crew that melds house, tech and broken beat for a deeply soulful sound. This shit is fire.

Update: The label, Jus’House, just released this tune on vinyl with an expected digital release soon to follow. The link above will take you to a site where you can purchase the record. The label contacted me asking to take down the free download link, and out of respect to the label and to the artists, I have agreed. It’s not my intention to cut into anyone’s way of life with these welfare offerings. I just want people to hear good tunes. So, please do follow the link above and support the artists. You can hear the brilliance of this tune there (just click on the headphones next to the song name on the Juno site). I’ll update this post later with a link where the mp3 can be purchased once it’s officially released.

Ghostman – 25th Hour
Another sick sick sick Funky beat. Peep Ghostman’s myspace page for more soulful goodness.

Babatundi Olatunji – Long Distance Lover
On of my favorites from Olatunji, the late great Nigerian master of percussion. Off the Love Drum Talk album.

I speak the truth, I tell no lie

In: Cashless, Crazy Talk, Elz, Empanadamn, Lil Tiger, Misc.

Been masturbating, since the 4th of July. Don’t believe me? I can prove it!

And because of it, I must tell all those who peruse this site the truth about the people who write this drivel! They are not who you think they are! Think they just spin the records that you love, huh? Well I’m here to tell you, IT’S ALL LIES!

EMPANADAMN: This person has never actually eaten an empanada! His name springs from a severe case of dislexia and a fixation on the inevitable damnation of all pandas. He is a 6’7″ native of Oslo, and eats soul food 8 times a week, particularly neck bones and whiskey.

CASHLESS: Tries to portray himself as a poor man? Claims his nationality to be Jamaican? Wrong, he is actually the independently wealthy son of an Irish businessman, heir to a fortune built on urinal cakes. His facial hair has been known break broad swords and he has rejected the microwave. He’s also the former world record holder for longest recorded camel clutch on a teenager. (Never call him by his real name, Paddy Higgins O’Houlihan Flanigan Fitzpatrick Hanrihan IIX).

LIL TIGER: Born and raised in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin, he is a hater of all things circular, and his eyebrows are implants. He spent his youth throwing rocks at onlookers as he practiced his “dontchaknow” dj style in nothing but a beanie and socks during the long winter months. He prides himself on being able to pee all 50 states in alphabetical order in the snow, off one 12 oz. beverage.

ELZ: The most diabolical tiddly winks player ever produced by the great state of West Virginia. Other than that, he’s your normal half-Dutch, half-Malaysian, half-Greek, half-Madagascarian Appalachian warlord with a beard thicker than mature oak tree trunk.

So you see my friends, these are not the people who you think they are! I trust that now that I have pulled away the veil, you can fully appreciate them for who they are.

Until the next time,
Join the Resistance!!!

March is upon us and that means a lot of things – It’s Spring (again), March Madness, bewaring the Ides of March (St. Ides or not), South By South West, Winter Music Conference, St. Patricks Day, Dentist’s Day, Doctor’s Day, Toast Day, and Tater Day. But more importantly, we’re serving up our first installment of this month’s WELFARE. Hopefully you’ll find a little something in our offering to accompany your every day this March and beyond.

empanadamn | Snow way

The-Dream “Walkin’ On The Moon” (Feat. Kanye West)
I was a non-believer when I first heard The-Dream. Then I saw him perform at Hot 97’s Summer Jam ’08. Having a crew of hot, back-up dancers kinda helped seal the deal. At any rate, here’s a cut off of the soon to be released, sophomore album Love Vs. Money.

The Foreign Exchange “Daykeeper” (Feat. Muhsinah)
I used to work in a law firm years back, and was on a project with a group of folks, one of which was a law student (again, cue Lost Boys’ “Renee”) whom I wrote off as an entitled b*tch because she was blonde, highly edumecated and, to top it off, attractive. The group conversation veered onto the topic of music, which I really don’t enjoy talking about with the layman. A co-worker mentioned to blondie that I was a DJ, to which responded with much intrigue, asking about the type of music I was into, and so on. She nodded with agreement, and started rattling off her favorites which included bunch of R&B, soul, Okay Player affiliates, and the like. Homegirl was a sheep in wolf’s clothing. At any rate, she recently hit me up and asked me if I heard The Foreign Exchange’s album Leave It All Behind, and shared a few of her choice cuts. Coincidentally, they are performing this Sunday at Highline Ballroom in NY, so check them out.

The Rachels “Lloyd’s Register”
I first heard The Rachels blaring inside the Sound Exchange (R.I.P.) in Austin, Texas on an afternoon when I probably should have been in class. I was captivated by the soul of the album, though delivered in modern classical form. I can’t remember who was working at the time, but he turned me onto the group. This song is probably my favorite on the album, as it plays through a cycle of emotions leaving me with a lump in my throat.

Archie Whitewater “Cross Country”
I don’t know how I acquired this one, but I’m glad I did. And somehow it always finds its way to my playlist set to shuffle. After talking to my mom this past Sunday telling me about the 80 degree weather for the week, it makes me want to be cross country. Peep the xylophone action.

Morcheeba “Fear & Love”
I found out about Morcheeba from a postcard that got mailed to my parents’ home over summer break from college. On the postcard there was a small, blurry picture of a girl that looked like Björk. Hoping it was a side project of sorts, I HAD to investigate. I called a toll-free number on the postcard and heard a snippet of Trigger Hippie, the lead track for their debut album Who Can You Trust? and was sold. So, unrelated to the Icelandic pop star, two brothers with a jazzy-pop songstress carried the torch of the UK downtempo movement and was met with a positive response over yonder. I couldn’t get with their 3rd album and beyond as they went for a polished pop style, and just felt too Gap for me.

—————

cashless | Spring Yang in this thang…

Geeneus – Peace of Heaven feat. Sacha
The first time I heard of Dubstep and UK Funky producer Geeneus was on the remix on DJ Wonder’s “What (have you done for me lately)”. He had an anthem with his remix to Benga & Coki’s “Night”. He hits my radar again (big shout to Dayta), with “Peace of Heaven” off his 2008 release, Volumes: One.

Marsha Ambrosius – Cloud 9
When Floetry broke up, that didn’t stop Marsha Ambrosius from continuing to make good music (no G.O.O.D. Music). She’s back at it with her latest mixtape, Truly Yours. Although I can’t say that I enjoyed the mixtape in its entirety, I will say that “Cloud 9” is still that crack. Enjoy.

Drake – Successful feat. Trey Songz
Hi, internet. Can we stop talking about Drake yet? Obviously not. This gets major bumpage in the ride, even though I do turn it down really low when riding through the hood.

Erykah Badu – Real Thang (Astronote Remix)
So it’s a new remix to a song that is in no way new. Who cares? Because when Astronote put his foot in it, it regained that new track smell.

Stevie Wonder – My Cherie Amor (Beatnik & K. Salaam remix)
For some reason when I first snagged this track, I coulda swore that said “Salaam Remi remix). My mind is playing tricks on me.

—————

dj lil tiger | is it spring yet?

Jay Sean – Tonight (Crazy Cousinz Remix)
Another fire remix from the Crazy Cousinz crew. (UK) Funky that I’m all about these days.

Shea Soul – Playing Tricks (Faeda Remix)
Another (UK) Funky tune for you, this one a sick soulful production from Faeda. Heavy broken house feel to this one. Love the vocals, too.

La Roux – In For The Kill (Skream’s Let’s Get Ravey Remix)
Props to Wesley and Elz for this one. They’ve been telling me about this tune for a while, and I finally got around to checking it out. The vocals really haunt me. Dubstep type shit with a throwback feel.

Erik Rico – Wonderful
Soulful uptempo stuff from the multi-talented singer, musician, producer Erik Rico, who has a very forward approach to soul music.

Gil Scott-Heron – Lady Day and John Coltrane
If you’re in a funk, Gil Scott-Heron got the remedy for you. Classic tune from his brilliant Pieces of Man LP.

—————

jd | some springy ish — because I’m ready for it

Black Star – Respiration (Dr. Luke Remix)

Eddie Senay – Cameo

Marvin Gaye – Music Feel the Soul

Three Times Dope – Mellow But Smooth

George Benson – Footin’ It
