The-Dream “Walkin’ On The Moon” (Feat. Kanye West)
I was a non-believer when I first heard The-Dream. Then I saw him perform at Hot 97’s Summer Jam ’08. Having a crew of hot, back-up dancers kinda helped seal the deal. At any rate, here’s a cut off of the soon to be released, sophomore album Love Vs. Money.

The Foreign Exchange “Daykeeper” (Feat. Muhsinah)
I used to work in a law firm years back, and was on a project with a group of folks, one of which was a law student (again, cue Lost Boys’ “Renee”) whom I wrote off as an entitled b*tch because she was blonde, highly edumecated and, to top it off, attractive. The group conversation veered onto the topic of music, which I really don’t enjoy talking about with the layman. A co-worker mentioned to blondie that I was a DJ, to which responded with much intrigue, asking about the type of music I was into, and so on. She nodded with agreement, and started rattling off her favorites which included bunch of R&B, soul, Okay Player affiliates, and the like. Homegirl was a sheep in wolf’s clothing. At any rate, she recently hit me up and asked me if I heard The Foreign Exchange’s album Leave It All Behind, and shared a few of her choice cuts. Coincidentally, they are performing this Sunday at Highline Ballroom in NY, so check them out.

The Rachels “Lloyd’s Register”
I first heard The Rachels blaring inside the Sound Exchange (R.I.P.) in Austin, Texas on an afternoon when I probably should have been in class. I was captivated by the soul of the album, though delivered in modern classical form. I can’t remember who was working at the time, but he turned me onto the group. This song is probably my favorite on the album, as it plays through a cycle of emotions leaving me with a lump in my throat.

Archie Whitewater “Cross Country”
I don’t know how I acquired this one, but I’m glad I did. And somehow it always finds its way to my playlist set to shuffle. After talking to my mom this past Sunday telling me about the 80 degree weather for the week, it makes me want to be cross country. Peep the xylophone action.

Morcheeba “Fear & Love”
I found out about Morcheeba from a postcard that got mailed to my parents’ home over summer break from college. On the postcard there was a small, blurry picture of a girl that looked like Björk. Hoping it was a side project of sorts, I HAD to investigate. I called a toll-free number on the postcard and heard a snippet of Trigger Hippie, the lead track for their debut album Who Can You Trust? and was sold. So, unrelated to the Icelandic pop star, two brothers with a jazzy-pop songstress carried the torch of the UK downtempo movement and was met with a positive response over yonder. I couldn’t get with their 3rd album and beyond as they went for a polished pop style, and just felt too Gap for me.

Geeneus – Peace of Heaven feat. Sacha
The first time I heard of Dubstep and UK Funky producer Geeneus was on the remix on DJ Wonder’s “What (have you done for me lately)”. He had an anthem with his remix to Benga & Coki’s “Night”. He hits my radar again (big shout to Dayta), with “Peace of Heaven” off his 2008 release, Volumes: One.

Marsha Ambrosius – Cloud 9
When Floetry broke up, that didn’t stop Marsha Ambrosius from continuing to make good music (no G.O.O.D. Music). She’s back at it with her latest mixtape, Truly Yours. Although I can’t say that I enjoyed the mixtape in its entirety, I will say that “Cloud 9” is still that crack. Enjoy.

Drake – Successful feat. Trey Songz
Hi, internet. Can we stop talking about Drake yet? Obviously not. This gets major bumpage in the ride, even though I do turn it down really low when riding through the hood.

Erykah Badu – Real Thang (Astronote Remix)
So it’s a new remix to a song that is in no way new. Who cares? Because when Astronote put his foot in it, it regained that new track smell.

Stevie Wonder – My Cherie Amor (Beatnik & K. Salaam remix)
For some reason when I first snagged this track, I coulda swore that said “Salaam Remi remix). My mind is playing tricks on me.

Shea Soul – Playing Tricks (Faeda Remix)
Another (UK) Funky tune for you, this one a sick soulful production from Faeda. Heavy broken house feel to this one. Love the vocals, too.

La Roux – In For The Kill (Skream’s Let’s Get Ravey Remix)
Props to Wesley and Elz for this one. They’ve been telling me about this tune for a while, and I finally got around to checking it out. The vocals really haunt me. Dubstep type shit with a throwback feel.

Erik Rico – Wonderful
Soulful uptempo stuff from the multi-talented singer, musician, producer Erik Rico, who has a very forward approach to soul music.

Gil Scott-Heron – Lady Day and John Coltrane
If you’re in a funk, Gil Scott-Heron got the remedy for you. Classic tune from his brilliant Pieces of Man LP.

Sickness and snow kept me homebound today, so I’ve been catching up on some downloads from the past week. At the top of the heap is this masterpiece tribute mix by J.Period paying homage to the man Q-Tip, who’s instant classic The Renaissance album topped my list of favorites from last year.

My fondness for the Abstract Poetic’s music goes back to People’s Instinctive Travels, and it’s safe to say dude is one of the most influential artists in my humble little life. J.Period’s mix pulls together classic Tribe breaks, Tip verses, cameos, remixes and all kinds of other good shit to create one of the dopest mixes I’ve heard in a long, long time. And as a long-time Tribe fan, this shit really made my day.

BuhbOmp‘s own Cashless has this to say about it in a review he wrote for Hater Magazine:

There’s an old saying about how we should give someone their flowers while they’re still alive or something like that. I’m paraphrasing, but it seems like I haven’t heard this good a send-up of a living artist since … well, never. J-Period pulls out all the stops in paying tribute to one of the most transformative figures in hip-hop — and that’s a conservative statement. Matching the game-changing nature of the subject matter, Q-Tip and his legacy, the mixtape’s incredible composition, structure and production aesthetics are heretofore unparalleled. There isn’t enough space here for me to express how much you’re fucking up by not having this in heavy rotation right now!

Bonus (from Cashless): Earlier today on Twitter, Q-Tip and I shared a mild-mannered exchange of opinions. It seems however, that we both had the same point of view and I was employing out of pocket, non sequitur logic per usual. Let’s enjoy, shall we?

(Oddly enough, I had an almost indistinguishable Twitter exchange with Amanda Diva on Grammy night for her bigging up Coldplay and calling Radiohead’s live performance of 15 Step, “cacophonous”. Sorry, but in that situation, invoking “crazy talk” was well beyond warranted.)

In the middle of my exchange with Q-Tip, he sent this message to all of his followers: “cant do the inside joke things with the community u are the only one who fucks with me.” Could this all have been an inside tweet that I intercepted and got all Perez Hilton -vs- Noreaga with it? Could Tip’s Coldplay-versus-Radiohead posts have been intended for Amanda Diva, who is featured on Q-Tip’s song, “Manwomanboogie”? Regardless, I still greatly respect Q-Tip for the music he’s made in addition to being one of the most valuable contributors to the hip hop community and Black music at large.

Final note: I don’t want it to appear as if there was an actual beef or that Q-Tip is a bad guy. In fact, he sent me a direct message saying that everything was all in fun and that he would correctly pick Radiohead over Coldplay.

Drake – November 18th
The buzz surrounding Degrassi actor turned Rapper/Singer (No Joaquin), Drake, is deafening but seemingly warranted. Over the weekend, Drake dropped his latest mixtape, So Far Gone, and the response on the blogger/Twitter spheres was overwhelming. The track November 18th is somewhat of a homage to the late great, Dj Screw and the seminal track June 27th. While I think November 18th lacks some of the rough edges that make the O.G. so real, the polish of November 18th will finally bring some of that same realness to the clurb and/or the local becky experience.

Dj Deckstream feat Mos Def – Life is Good
Wanna hear something crazy? I like a new Mos Def song. Japanese dj, Deckstream of M-Flo fame, comes through with some jazzy heatrock production steez.

Outkast – SpottieOttieDopalicious (I.M. Elliot & Quix22 Club remix)
One of my favorite songs of all time, this time with a wobbly bmore/club feel to it. I’ve never heard of either I.M. Elliot or Quix22, color me disconnected, but when you make Spottie Ottie hipster friendly without offending me, I’m all about it.

BLK JKS – Lakeside
Nothing new here, just reminded myself and you people that BLK JKS will be playing at SXSW on March 19th. More info here.

Michael Jackson – PYT (U-Tern edit)
Canada’s king of the boogie edit, U-tern, hits hard again with a re-edited demo version of the MJ Classic. Speaking of the devil, make sure that you drop by Julien’s Auctions at the Beverly Hills Hilton this April to cop some nice joints from MJ’s personal collection of crazy shit. Personally, I’m feeling that animatronic head. :Pause:

Brookly’s Red Cafe has been one lucky rapper who gets a hold of hoTT BeatZ. This one reminds me of Obie Trice’s track “The Set Up”. I’m a sucker for that percolating sound.

Papoose “Amnesia”
Remember when Papoose was supposed to be that guy who brought hip-hop back to New York? Yeah, me neither. What about that 1.5 million dollar record contract through DJ Kay Slay? At any rate, Sade is the best.

Big Boi “Ringtone”
My ol’ buddy Antwan André Patton got a new album coming out called “Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son Of Chico Dusty”. This is one of the cuts on it on the uptempo, auto-tune tip. Also on the horizon for 2009 is an album from the other André, as well as a duet album in the form of a group called OutKast.

Busta Rhymes “Conglomerate” (Feat. Young Jeezy & Jadakiss)
This song really annoyed me in the beginning, but I’m a sucker for girls with accents (and I don’t mean Hyundai).

Public Enemy “Lost At Birth”
I’m watching Pineapple Express and there’s some great music throughout the movie. The last scene is hilarious, and I don’t even smoke weed! This track is used when Dale & Red are mounting up like regulators and mobbing down the street in a yellow Daewoo.

I posted this cut for a couple of reasons, primarily because it’s still embodies everything that can be good about hip hop. Secondly, as a reminder never to take even the most seemingly insignificant thing for granted. Brad Jordan is retiring the moniker Scarface after his lastest lp, Emeritus. ‘Face will be missed.

Hot 8 Brass Band – Get up (Diesler remix)
Not for nothing, your boy, Diesler has quietly become one of my favorite remixers. NOLA + handclaps from hell + sampler = heat. Simple equation.

Amp Fiddler, Sly & Robbie – Blackhouse (Paint the Whitehouse Black)
I really wished the mainstream media would have shown some false sense of outrage at such a provocative, beautiful piece of music as this. Instead, we have a lackadaisical offering from Jeezy and Nas and forgettable mixtape fodder from Luda. Hopefully this seeming to tribute to both Obama and George Clinton is welcome at buhbOmp. It’s produced/performed by soulman extraordinaire, Amp Fiddler, as well as Reggae legends and elder statespeople, Sly Dunbar & Robbie Shakespeare.

The closing cut from Herbert‘s classic 2001 LP Bodily Functions. Dani Siciliano showing her brilliance on the vocals. You gotta listen to this all the way through. It’s all about the change up when the keys come in. This song haunts me.

La Rouge – Alla Deng Lobi
An old favorite of mine from Surinamese/Dutch band La Rouge off their #8 Hosse Hosse album. Get inside the rhythm and percussion on this. Big up to cousin Daryl for passing me this CD in Arnhem a while back.

Mr V – Put Your Drink Down (Copyright Remix)
Funky house re-work of this big tune from the Lower East Side’s Mr. V feat. the Candela All Stars. PR-NY-UK connect.

Neon Phusion – The Future Ain’t The Same As It Used 2 b
Another tune from around the turn of the century, but still as forward-thinking and ahead of its time as ever. There are so many amazing layers to this tune and so many progressions from beginning to end — the vocals, the percussion, instrumentation — that I don’t even know where to begin. Neon Phusion was a collaboration between Bugz in the Attic’s Afronaut, Alex Phountzi and Kaidi Tatham. This track features the percussion programming by IG Culture. That’s a combo that just can’t go wrong. Just put this on and let it ride. Tune everything else out. This song is just beautiful. It boggles my mind that this tune is almost 10 years old now.

Run DMC “Christmas Time In Hollis”
The quintessential hip-hop x Christmas track. The video is great as well. I remember MTV’s holiday commercial spot using this song back in the day with animations by Keith Haring, who also did the cover art to the album.

Carlos Feliciano “Feliz Navidad”
Funky Bilinguin’. As a child, I remember seeing Señor Feliciano rip it on some holiday Christmas special feeling a great sense of pride. Dude has a lot of passion when he sings and plays.

Carlitos “Mi Burrito Sabanero”
Another clasico en español. This is a well known childrens version, sung by a young Venezuelan boy in the 70s. See the video here.

Vince Guaraldi “Christmas Time Is Here” (Instrumental)
Made famous from the holiday TV special “A Charlie Brown Christmas” this song is synonymous to Xmas at home for me. Strangely enough, this track strikes a mixture of emotions – warmth and happiness contrasted by somberness, longing, and loneliness. Such is the complexity of Charlie Brown’s character.

Vince Guaraldi Trio “Linus & Lucy (Pocketknife’s Hark, The Holler Remix)”
A revamped version for the Peanuts crew, this one always puts a smile on people’s face when they hear it in the mix. P.S. My mom does a great version of the teacher from Peanuts.

Autotune, love it or hate it, it’s not going anywhere for a while, at least if Ron Browz has anything to say about it. Kanye, T-Pain, Lil Wayne... Browz is the new king of autotune and unless you’re willing to implant an Antares VST in your brain, you ain’t putting autotune to more use than Browz. I’m not sure if dude has a real voice at all.

Q-Tip – “Move”
I know. I’m just as surprised as you are. I got tired of listening to the new authorities on “real hip hop.” You know the ones. They always recommend one bland backpack rap lp after another. They lost me somewhere along the road. I’m not carrying the flag any longer. I’m now somewhere between trying to see young ladies “Pop it 4 pimp” at the knucklehead 18 & up club and getting my grown and sexy on with people who’s outfit at the club cost more than my rent. Somehow “Move” is exactly where I’m at.

Lil Wayne – “Mrs. Officer (Gregg Nyce/Estelle refix)”
I don’t know what to tell you. The G&S set goes crazy for this blend and so do I. So there.

I’m dropping a recurrent here. Nothing new or anything. I’m really digging the intermingled screwed adlibs, but what really makes me flip is seeing women act out the lyrics on the dancefloor. This song is so nasty that it makes ME blush.

Rihanna – “Disturbia (Emynd’s Finally Blend)”
Outside of her looks, I haven’t been feeling much Rihanna lately. That doesn’t mean that her output can’t be salvaged. Emynd of CrossfadedBacon.com and Nolabounce.com comes strong to save what’s normally an unlistenable cut.
