It’s the middle of the month, and with the economy still in the shitter and getting shittier by the day, it’s time for another handout from the generous souls here at buhbOmp HQ. And like all good bureaucracies charged with overseeing the well-being of its needy constituents, we’re a day late and a DJ short. While Cashless is in Japón brokering peace between the Jamaicans and Japanese, Empanadamn and Lil Tiger got the goods to hold you over ’til the first rolls back around. Try not to spend it all in one place:
empanadamn | Halloween treats
Bernard Herrmann “Opening Credits” of Psycho
Herrmann is a big dude in film scoring, serving up sounds of the scary, sinister, and suspense. From the classic Psycho, DJ Scratch used this composition in Busta Rhymes’ “Gimme Some More”
Castlevania “Stage One”
The first level ditty to one of my most favoritest video games ever in the whole wide world. Simon Belmont got whip appeal.
Mike Oldfield “Tubular Bells”
Virgin Records first official release that topped the charts for some time in the UK. The album, mostly instrumental, implemented a lot of sounds never recorded on such a successful release. The title track was also popularized by the film The Exorcist.
Mötley Crüe “Shout At The Devil”
As a child, this song kinda scared the shit out of me, being about yellin’ at the devil and all. But my brother was jammin this, so I guess it was OK. Out of all the Crüe, I liked Mick Mars because he looked like a short Alice Cooper. Factoid: Vince Neil is part Mexican. Thanks to Guitar Hero, people everywhere now rejoice in Satan and don’t even realize it, so nothing out of the ordinary.
RJD2 “The Horror”
I’m not a big fan of the dude, but RJD2’s got a couple of bangers. This is one makes me envision a montage for 70s slasher flick for a diabolical doctor dude who’s really not a doctor, but a school nurse assistant who’s not quite right.
*Bonus bOmp*
DJ Qbert “Alcohol Razorblade Slide”
My favorite track and scene from “Wave Twisters”. The line, “he separated the skull and masturbated in front of it,” is a sound-bite referencing Jeffrey Dahmer (I think)
download: Candy with a razorblade in it. Shhh.
dj lil tiger | get a job, grouch!
H.I.S.D “Break of Dawn”
On of my favorite tunes from the talented Hueston Independent Spit District crew making moves in my hometown. Off their dope Summer Sessions album.
Solange f. Q-Tip “Sandcastle Disco (Remix)”
Because I never tire with showing Houston love, here’s another Space City product with some strong drums and a feel-good vibe. Solange showing she can hold her own.
Monareta “Me Voy Pal Mar”
I’m loving the dub/electronic flare and the nice edits in this tune from this Bogotá duo. Colombia holding it down.
Aretha Franklin “Jump To It (Prince Klassen Young Professional Re-Edit)”
Killer rework straight out the heart of Texas. Austin’s Prince Klassen def keeping the parties movin’.
Jermaine Jackson “Erucu”
Since we’re taking it back a bit, here’s a raw disco classic that should bring out the beast in you.

/// MAIN EVENT: 10p-1a ///
UNEMPLOYABLE NYC will host an event where art and music collide. With the release of the new album “Green Streets” from HANDINHAND, the DJ/production/song-writing duo of Mike Genato & Katy Walker, break new ground. Veteran producer, Mike Genato, (Mathematics, Peter Hadar) and music composer for TV and film has been releasing music for over 10 years and Katy has been DJing for equally as long. The event allows them to showcase music from the album as well as the singers and artists featured on the project.
YADIRA BROWN who wrote and performed “Sweet Relief” on the album, is an Austin-based singer/songwriter whose music mixes electronic production with the singer’s warm, powerful voice and passionate lyrics to produce a unique, mature sound that stands completely on its own. In the past she appeared on the Living Legends (the Grouch) and Bus Drivers albums. Leaving underground hip-hop behind in order to pursue a more enlightened, feminine and personal sound, Yadira began writing new material and performing regularly in Austin and surrounding areas. This is her first NYC performance. DEE TEAGUE will also perform “Free like Me” from the album as well as HandinHand’s re-imagining of the Gil-Scott Heron song, “Superman” (in this case “Superwoman” which has been popular among DJs). Singer/song-writer, IRENE MERRING will perform the powerful album opener, “Time Will Tell”. A HANDINHAND DJ set will also feature live vocals from Irene Merring.

Every 1st and 15th of the month (so grab your welfare checks and come on) the dudes at buhbOmp and selected guest selectors (redundant?) present the top 5 cuts they/we are feeling at the moment. We’re popping this cherry today (albeit a few hours late) with buhbOmp’s own Cashless, Empanadamn and the Captain of this ship, Lil Tiger. So without further adoodoo, we present the first installment of Welfare.

Jef Cashless | I have noodling tendencies while djing
Peedi Crakk – More Towels
As you can tell from previous posts, been feeling Peedi for a minute and this one’s the hottest banger since “Take me home.” Obviously, I’m not the only one feeling it. I won’t include this cut in my download package since you can download this tune from Empanadamn’s list.
T-Pain feat Lil Wayne – I can’t Believe it (Dj Illo Bass Mix)
This song goes hard in the clurb plain jane, but up the bpm’s to 114 and add some 808 bottom and the vibe changes from G&S to ass and titties.
Big Chief feat Jim Jones – My Swagg
The steady stream of Dallas artists blowing up seemingly outta nowhere and taking over the southern rap scene continues with Big Chief. This time with none other than the kufi-slapping cappo of the Dipset Skull Gang, Jimmy Jones.
T.I. et al – Swagger Like Us (Cobra Krames remix)
Sick of playing the OG? Well here you go.
Busy Signal – Strappings
Not sure of the riddim, but this is a must have for me. %100 rinse worthy! Holla at it!
download: Get you some…

empanadamn | For the club | Serato ready with cue-points
Bramma – It’s Whatever (Day Rave Riddim) download
Hollow-y / driving riddim x gruff / ghostly sounding vocals = Dancehalloween?
Colby O’ Donis – Natural High (Feat. T-Pain) download
Dude looks like he rolls with Lee Hotti n’ ’em, but this is a pretty good pop tune with some bass appeal and T-Pain hitting switches.
DJ Felli Fell – Feel It (Feat. Sean Paul, T-Pain, Flo-Rida & Pitbull) download
Song should be huge. It’s got a full club feel with a full cast of your usual suspects for uptempo club bangerz.
Jadakiss – By My Side (Feat. Ne-Yo) download
As much as I hate the term “swagger”, Jada is one dude truly embodies it vocally. It’s nice he threw the ladies a bone joining forces with one of my favorite new R&B dudes. I predict big things for Jada.
Peedi Crakk – More Towels download
Great mid-tempo party track with a dash of funk that gives us a break from all the either slowed or fast synthy beats.

dj lil tiger | 5 random-ass tunes that are doing it for me right now
Stiffed – What You Gon’ Do
lead tune off Sex Sells ep. Early stuff from Santogold.
Raphael Saadiq – Big Easy
off his new The Way I See It lp.
Café Tacuba – De Acuerdo
off their latest album, SiNo. This group just makes me feel happy as shit.
The Lo – Lumdi (La)
latest Camp Lo hottness
Q-Tip – Gettin’ Up
off his forthcoming The Renaissance solo lp. Saw him perform this live at Rock the Bells and it sounded superb.

It’s Thursday, Sept 11th (We’re liberal over here, but we’re not punks. We don’t forget) 2008 @ 11:07 am and Hurricane Ike is barreling up the Gulf of Mexico on his way to Houston. I’ve already received emails about one of my dj gigs being cancelled and I’m gonna make a round of calls to see what’s really good on the others.
The good folks at the Law Firm of ********* & ********, llp (my weekday employer), have offered to temporarily relocate me to the City of Austin while Ike beats up my hometown in a similar fashion to another dude named Ike and a young stallion from Nutbush named Tina.
Updates forthcoming.

***UPDATE***
I quit!!! I was told that 4Hero’s The Action at 9pm (lounging hours) was too thug/ghetto/club for a sushi bar.
For our 10th episode, we’re blessed to present an all-vinyl, one-take, eclectic mix from Austin’s prolific DJ, designer, artist, and musician — DJ STARSIGN:
“DJ Starsign was more of a rock guy (maybe new wave rock is more appropriate) when he started listening to De La Soul, Ice Cube, Run DMC, EPMD, BDP, Jungle Brothers, etc… and fell in love with beats via old funk, soul, disco, and even rock records. He bought a cheap belt-driven turntable at a pawn shop and started buying dusty vinyl in an effort to discover more beat-oriented music. Choosing to find good music from across the board as opposed to limiting himself to one specific genre, Starsign eventually started djing where the m.o. was to play anything as long as it had a good vibe and it fit with the rest of the mix.
“As a disciple of Bomb Squad, Dust Brothers, Prince Paul and Marley Marl, any record with a heavy beat would receive special attention. More than just playing records, Starsign sees the role of a dj as a creator of atmosphere. Taking elements from classic funk, hazy underground disco, house, electro, old school hip and assorted beats and pieces, Starsign’s sound is a melodic, spaced-out, rhythmic, soulful and nostalgic affair that aims to move your boots and make you feel 10 feet tall.”
