As you already know, Fourth of July weekend is about to jump off, and that means it’s time for SLF‘s THIRD ANNUAL 4TH OF JULY WEEKEND ROOFTOP BBQ PARTY. We’re at a new location this year, still in Brooklyn, but this time we’ll be partying it up in Prospect Heights. And, we’ve put together a really diverse lineup that we know you’ll love.
PLEASUREMAKER and SEÑOR OZ from the wildly popular AFROLICIOUS party in San Fransisco will join us and they’re bringing their band to keep the dancefloor bubbling. Last year’s crowd favorites, PEOPLE’S CHAMPS return with their energetic live performance and are guaranteed to knock your socks off once again. The MUSIC WITHOUT BORDERS crew will be in the place, with KUNAL MERCHANT and SEIF AL-DIN bringing their diverse party vibes to the tables, and rising star DJ LILY VANILLI of NANA CHILL will be showing off her party rocking skills. And of course, it wouldn’t be an SLF party without the SLF DJ crew — LIL TIGER, Q-MASTAH and DJ TRAINWRECK — keeping the party live with their trademark eclectic blend of Funk, Hip-Hop, Soul, Disco, Afrobeat, Reggae and more.
Best of all, the party is FREE (but bring some cash for booze and BBQ). For the address to the rooftop and directions to the location, make sure to send an RSVP email to rsvp@soundliberation.org. Keep in mind, space WILL be limited, and RSVP does NOT guarantee entry.
As some of y’all know from previous years, this party goes off, so get there early (and stay late)! If you’re looking to avoid the tourist crowd, cheesy parties and overpriced bars, and you want to have fun with great DJs and bands playing awesome music, the SLF ROOFTOP BBQ PARTY is def the place to be.
NOTE: The party will be on SUNDAY, JULY 3 (and NOT on the 4th itself, that way you’re not hurting on Tuesday when you go back to work, and you and your dancing feet can spend the actaul holiday recovering from all the fun).
Here are the details:

AFRO-DUB SESSIONS is back! Come kick off your Memorial Day weekend with the SLF crew FRIDAY NIGHT as we take our renowned AFRO-DUB party out of the club and into an awesome loft space in Brooklyn. As a special treat, we’re bringing in Boston’s Ethiopian groove collective, DEBO BAND to help you get loose on the dance floor. SUPER HI-FI, New York’s hottest Afro-Dub band, will also perform, and SLF resident DJ’s LINH, Q-MASTAH and LIL TIGER will keep the party popping on the decks.
If you’ve never seen DEBO BAND before, you’re in for a treat. DEBO is not your mother’s Ethiopian dance band. Searing horns, crooning vocals, slinky funk grooves. Dubbed out violin and accordion. Bass-heavy, brazen, and dense. Led by Ethiopian-American saxophonist Danny Mekonnen and fronted by charismatic vocalist Bruck Tesfaye, DEBO‘s performances bring together the best of the last forty years of Ethiopian music, with a reverence for the vintage sounds of the 1970s and a commitment to discovering contemporary gems, as well as developing new compositions.
Don’t forget to RSVP for the address to the party!

JayCeeOh, tour DJ for Wiz Khalifa and winner of the 2011 McDonald’s National Flavor Battle, makes his way back to NY to rock it with the MWB crew. He recently took his talents to the West Coast, so we’ll call this a bit of a homecoming for our friend. He’ll be coming to us live right after a successful tour across the EU and after shows in Austin for SXSW. We’re psyched to have him because he’s without a doubt one of the most in-demand DJs in the country. Dude’s been killin’ it!

Known as the best selling vodka in Russia – which actually says quite a bit – Russian Standard will be on board, hooking you up with free drinks from 10-11pm and we’ll have them as our featured bottle special of the night. Message any of the admins on the facebook invite for a great deal if you want to rock a table or booth the night of, or if its your b-day, or if you want to reserve space for your crew.
The drinks start pouring at 10, so come prepared. Kush is the destination, and as usual, you can order food early and hookahs all night. Ask for the MWB special and they’ll take care of you.
Your RSVP Matters: so make sure you do, or you may get charged at the door.

/// About the artists:
DJ CARTER VAN PELT hosts WKCR 89.9FM’s “Eastern Standard Time”, a Jamaican music program that airs live every Saturday from 6-10 a.m. The show highlights roots reggae of the ’70s and early ’80s, Rocksteady from the mid ’60s and Ska from the early ’60s. Carter also co-hosts the weekly Roots Rock Reggae party at Motor City Bar, and organizes the popular Coney Island Reggae Soundsystem parties, one of which SLF co-hosted this past summer.
K VIBES has been singing reggae professionally for nearly 20 years. She was one of the last of a new generation of Brooklyn-based reggae artists to record for iconic Jamaican record producer Clement “Coxsone” Dodd, scoring a cult-hit with “Frenemies” in 2001.
WILLOW WILSON was widely recorded at the height of Brooklyn’s digital reggae/dancehall era in the mid/late 1980s. His voice can be heard on dozens of recordings, including a full length self-titled LP, made primarily for Whitfield Henry’s prolific Witty’s label. His latest release, a cover of Bob Marley’s “Slave Driver” for Taitu Records, reveals his strong affinity for singer Dennis Brown.
SUPER HI-FI, whose sound combines elements of Afrobeat and Dub, is a five-piece collective that features members of Aphrodesia, Slavic Soul Party, People’s Champs, and the Blue Man Group.
About Afro-Dub Sessions:
AFRO-DUB SESSIONS is dedicated to the idea that Dub, born in Jamaica, and African musical styles like Afrobeat, Afropop and Afrofunk are natural partners in the origins of global dance music. Each month SLF explores these connections by hosting a different guest DJ specializing in Dub or African-influenced styles.
The first Afro-Dub Sessions kicked off at Rose Live Music on January 30, 2010, and since that time has featured the talents of Victor “Ticklah” Axelrod, Sal P of Liquid Liquid, Amir (of Kon and Amir), Deadly Dragon Sound, Subatomic Sound System, Bastard Jazz’s DJ DRM, Awesome Tapes From Africa, DJ Afro-Marc, Hahn Solo of Dub Is a Weapon, DJ Chicus of Redbud Records, Mr. Chatman, Victor Rice and more. ///

I’ll be rocking nearby where Dick Clark’s balls drop at Highbar in Midtown Manhattan. Still wondering what tune to drop at the stroke of midnight. Unfortunately, this will most likely not be a GURU / Gangstarr / Teena Marie type of crowd, but I can hope. If you’re looking for a posh spot to drop a grip of money for an open bar, food, feverous dancing to bad (and good) music played well, I’ve got the spot for YOU.
