I just heard this morning that Big Daddy Rack apologized for saying that the chumps who arrested Skip acted stupidly. What kind of punk-ass country is this where you can’t even tell the obvious truth about obvious truths. Obviously this country is rampant with over sensitivity, or as my friend would say, “(insert something here that you will find offensive)”, and I agree 100% because they are more interested in protecting the arresting officers from the assault on their intellects than they are in admitting their apparent deficiency in their intellects.

I had the pleasure of meeting Gibril Kuyateh, aka The GiKu Experience, last week in Brooklyn and immediately caught good vibes. Gibril is a member of AfroMosaicSoul, the Brooklyn-based dance and music collective that hosts the infamous Libation parties at the Sullivan Room in the Village.

A few days after I met him, Gibril sent me a mix he did recently for Soulkomplex Radio in Germany, and I really wanted to share it here. It’s rich with deep, soulful African-inspired compositions that made for a perfect soundtrack to my weekend:

Here’s how he describes the mix:

The goal with this mix was to create a visceral connection that transported the listener to Africa. Talks with DJ Sosue out of Germany were the inspiration. She produced this dope track along with Dele Sosimi (Fela‘s keyboard player) called Wahala Identity Mix … that set the tone when i re-mixed (aka re-experienced) the Wahala track blending it with “Angel Song” ft. Josh from Blaze. At that time, she asked me to do a guest mix for Soulkomplex. My shows can be heard on Giant Step and will be on SmoothTraxx in the next couple of weeks.

In addition to DJing and producing music, Gibril also hosts dance workshops that teach kids what the AfroMosaicSoul crew refers to as the Mosaic Soul style of house dancing:

Mosaic Soul is the next evolution of dance. The newest form of African American social dance has risen from the underground. It carries the genetic traits of its forbears: African dance, Latin dance, tap, modern, popping & locking, break dancing(b-boying), hip hop, house dance, lofting and capoiera to name a few.

I first experienced the energy of AfroMosaicSoul at the Winter Music Conference in Miami a few years ago, and it left such a strong impression on me that I vouch for just about anything they get involved with. One of my recent fascinations is with English singer MPHO (pronounced “Mmm-poh”). Hailing from Brixton in South London, she’s supplied vocals for various UK outfits; some of you may recognize her from the Bugz In The Attic‘s cut “Booty La La“. MPHO (also known as Mpho Skeef) has been hard on the grind to release her debut album Pop Art dropping in the near future. Her first single “Box N Lox” will be available Monday, July 20, at 7 Digital.

We began this little project in L.A. back in August of 2005, but life put the brakes on things a year later when Lil Tiger moved to NY to start a new life, and Mr. Vish moved back to Houston to attend to his family.

Here’s a little something special that popped up in my inbox the other day. Bavu Blakes is about to release his new single called “On The Cool,” and it’s ill. I’ve been checking Vu’s raps for more than 15 years now, dating back to my early Austin days at UT, and dude never ceases to amaze. Aside from having exceptional skill and intellect both on and off the mic, one of Bavu’s hallmarks is his stylistic versatility.

He continues to demonstrate that versatility with this new track, where he lays out an uptempo, party-inspiring vibe on a sick, percussive dance beat by Picnic (aka Picnic Tyme) of PPT fame (shouts to Pikahsso and Tahiti). The tune also features the wonderful vocals of S’ence (pronounced Essence) on the hook. This will get a proper release soon (including video treatment), but for now, check out a snippet and see what you think:

This works for me on a lot of levels, the most significant being that it’s a damn fun song.

Keep an eye out for the single when it drops (props to Kunal for the dope cover art), and get ready for the full-length to be released later this year.

The Texas music scene stays diverse and vibrant, and Bavu continues to shine a spotlight on the depth and wealth of talent that Dallas has been giving to the world for many, many years.
