Because, you know, even some masterpieces can be improved upon.
If you aren’t already aware of the hard work Roger Riley & Teddy Troutman have been putting into the game, GET FAMILIAR.
They are the future. No, they are beyond the future. They are at the bare, bleeding edge at the absolute end of the future. There is no more future after this.
N.E.R.D., Kanye and company wish they sounded this good.

After a three-year hiatus, DJ LIL TIGER has brought the radio podcast he started with MR. VISH back to life. And to celebrate the resurrection, he’s put together an hourlong Funky House (aka UK Funky) mix:

touch&feel:radio is a podcast founded by MR. VISH and DJ LIL TIGER that features a dirty-style blend of various types of soulful urban music from around the world. Genres include: Funky House/UK Funky, UK Garage, 2-Step, Broken Beat, Dancehall, Reggae, Soul, Grime, Jungle/Drum and Bass, Hip-Hop, House, Soca and whatever else suits our souls.
We began this little project in L.A. back in August of 2005, but life put the brakes on things a year later when Lil Tiger moved to NY to start a new life, and Mr. Vish moved back to Houston to attend to his family.
After a long break, though, it’s time to bring this baby back and get the music flowing once more. Thanks for sticking with us. Much more to come.
Join the touch&feel:radio facebook page to keep track of updates on the show.

k.orr had intended to post this up a while ago, but things got lost in the shuffle due to technical difficulties. So, I’m resurrecting this post from the dead. ‘Cause everybody could use a little more BDK in their lives.
Ant Marshall, founder of Lyricist Lounge, put together this documentary on Hip-Hop legend Big Daddy Kane, aka The Smooth Operator aka the Baddest MC to Ever Touch a Mic.
I never got to see Kane in his prime, but I did have the pleasure of seeing him perform a few years back in Houston alongside Slick Rick, Whodini, Rob Base and Chubb Rock. Incredible show. Even as an elder statesman in the rap game, Kane brings a life and energy to the stage that many younger cats can only dream of. He’s a commanding presence, and a living legend. And he still puts it down.
You can catch the full documentary below, or watch it in slightly better quality on Scion’s Easy 10 Filmmaker Series site (they suck for not offering an embed code):
This one’s for all my production nerds and assorted beat heads out there.
Michel Rouzic at Photosounder, audio-editing software that uses sound-image manipulation to offer enhanced sound editing capabilities, claims to have used images created by his program to extrapolate individual instruments from a sound recording. Other programs have made similar claims, but the quality on this is the best of the bunch that I’ve thus far.
Check out how he isolated the synths and the drums and vocals from Ohio Players’ “Funky Worm“:
You can read the specifics on his process on his blog.
Time will tell how practically this method can be applied to other songs, but it seems legit. And just the idea of it all is kinda blowing my mind right now. This could open up a lot of doors.
BuhbOmp undercover agent Jef Cashless gives an inside scoop on what went on at the SXSW music conference.

RECAP: Despite my utter lack of scheduling, and preparation, I still managed to eek out a great time in slightly less than 36 hours. We did however run into some technical issues during that time, most notably when the battery of my G1 died shortly after arriving at the Fader Fort. So I wasn’t able to blog/tweet much about the great performances of Bun B, Jadakiss, the entire G.O.O.D. Music family featuring Kanye West or the Diplo/Blaqstarr I Heart Comix afterparty. Actually, by the time that Kanye hit the stage I was on triple stage inebriation and probably couldn’t have posted much to begin with. It was a short trip, lasting only a day and a half, but possibly one of the best music conference trips I’ve gone on since my first. Shout out to DBDR.
DJ LIL TIGER starts things off with a love-themed Soul set with splashes of classic disco and contemporary R&B. EMPANADAMN holds it down in the second half with a mesh of synthy dance, pop, Hip-Hop and electro.
