For our 4/12 episode of IMPULSE TRAVELS, we were especially blessed to have WONDERWHEEL RECORDINGS‘ NICKODEMUS and THORNATO stop by the station to play some of their latest tunes for us.
NICKODEMUS, co-founder of NY’s legendary TURNTABLES ON THE HUDSON parties, took over the controls and laced us with as-yet-unreleased tracks forthcoming on Wonderwheel, the label he started and continues to run out of his beloved borough of Brooklyn. His selections include songs from Populous (Lecce), Lagartijeando + El Búho (Argentina + Paris), DJ Khalab + Baba Sissoko + Nikitch (Italy + Mali + France), Alsarah + iZem (Sudan + NYC + France) and a few of his own unreleased productions.
THORNATO blessed us with a live IMPULSE MIX showcasing songs from his brand new album, Bennu, featuring collaborations with Gappy Ranks (London), Spy From Cairo (Italy + NYC), Grupo Taribo (Ecuador), Zongo Abongo (Ghana), The Busy Twist (London), Kongo Elektro (South Africa + Memphis + DR Congo), Lido Pimienta (Colombia) and more. His set also includes a few of his own remixes and some yet-to-be released from the likes of Geoffrey Oryema + Eppelsuace (+ South Africa + Memphis) and Atropolis X Madosini (QNS + South Africa).
We had some technical difficulties with the first part of THORNATO’s live mix, but we cleared those up and got the sound polished for the second part, which you can check out below.
The show also features new music from FKJ (Tours + New Zealand), B. Bravo (Los Angeles), Tom Misch + Carmody (UK), Lord Echo (New Zealand), Moullinex (Lisbon), Sángo (Seattle), and more.
DJ LIL TIGER starts things off with a love-themed Soul set with splashes of classic disco and contemporary R&B. EMPANADAMN holds it down in the second half with a mesh of synthy dance, pop, Hip-Hop and electro.
